Search no longer looks the way it did a few years ago. Google shows AI-generated summaries above many results, offers a conversational AI Mode, and millions of people now ask ChatGPT and other assistants for recommendations instead of scrolling a list of blue links.
If you run a small business, the obvious question is: does SEO for AI search require a whole new playbook? The short answer is no. The foundations still work, and Google itself says so. But some priorities have shifted, and a few popular "AI SEO" tactics are a waste of money.
This guide covers what actually changed, what Google and other platforms say about getting cited, and a practical plan to stay visible in 2026.
What changed in search, and what didn't
Three things are different now:
- Answers appear before links. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode summarize information and cite a handful of sources. Some questions get answered without a click.
- Conversations replace single queries. People ask longer, more specific questions and follow up, such as "Which accounting firm near me handles VAT for small online stores?"
- More places to be found. Besides Google, assistants like ChatGPT search the web and cite pages, and Microsoft's Copilot draws on Bing.
What did not change: these systems still need to find, crawl and understand your pages. They still prefer content that is clear, accurate and trustworthy. And they still lean on signals like your business details, reviews and reputation across the web.
What Google says about ranking in AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google's documentation on AI features and your website is refreshingly direct. There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimization is needed. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. That is it.
Google's listed best practices are the same ones good SEOs have followed for years:
- Allow crawling in robots.txt and make sure your hosting or CDN is not blocking Googlebot
- Make pages findable through internal links
- Provide a good page experience
- Keep important content in text, supported by good images and video
- Make sure structured data matches what is visible on the page
- Keep your Google Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date
Google also notes that you do not need new machine-readable files, special "AI text files" or special schema markup to appear in these features. Traffic from AI features is included in the Performance report in Search Console, under the "Web" search type.
Write content that AI answers want to cite
AI systems summarize. Pages that are easy to summarize accurately, and that add something other pages don't, have an advantage. Practical ways to get there:
- Answer the question early. Put a clear, direct answer near the top of the page, then expand on it.
- Use descriptive headings. Headings phrased as the questions customers ask make it easy for both readers and machines to find the right section.
- Be specific. "We deliver within Riyadh in one to two working days" is more useful than "fast delivery." Prices, service areas, opening hours and policies should be stated plainly.
- Show real experience. Google's guidance on helpful, reliable, people-first content emphasizes experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. First-hand examples, clear authorship and accurate details all help.
- Keep it current. Update pages when prices, services or regulations change, and remove outdated claims.
- Avoid mass-produced AI text. Using AI to help write is fine. Publishing large volumes of unedited AI content mainly to rank can fall under Google's spam policies on scaled content abuse.
If you serve multiple countries or languages, the basics of multilingual SEO with hreflang matter even more, because AI answers are often given in the user's language.
Get the technical foundations right
The best content does nothing if crawlers cannot reach it. Check these regularly:
- Robots.txt and crawler controls. Know which bots you allow. For Google, Googlebot handles Search, including AI features. A separate token, Google-Extended, lets you limit use of your content for training and grounding in other Google AI systems; it is not what controls Search. For ChatGPT, OpenAI documents separate crawlers: OAI-SearchBot for showing sites in ChatGPT search, and GPTBot for model training. Blocking one does not block the other, so decide deliberately.
- Speed and stability. Slow, heavy pages frustrate users and crawlers alike. Our guide to Core Web Vitals explains what to measure.
- Clean HTML. Important text should be in the page itself, not only inside images or loaded late by scripts.
- Structured data. Mark up your organization, local business details, products, FAQs and articles where appropriate, and keep it consistent with the visible content.
- Snippet controls. If you need to keep something out of AI summaries, Google supports
nosnippet,data-nosnippet,max-snippetandnoindex. Use them carefully, because they also affect regular search results.
Strengthen local and brand signals
When someone asks an AI assistant for "the best dentist near me" or "a web developer in Beirut," the answer draws heavily on local and reputation signals. That makes classic local SEO more valuable, not less:
- Complete and verify your Google Business Profile with accurate categories, hours, photos and services
- Ask happy customers for reviews and reply to them professionally
- Keep your name, address and phone number consistent across directories and social profiles
- Get mentioned on reputable local sites, associations and media where it makes sense

Measure visibility and avoid expensive shortcuts
If AI answers resolve some questions directly, you may see impressions grow while clicks on simple informational queries flatten. That does not automatically mean SEO is failing. Track:
- Search Console performance for impressions, clicks and the queries you appear for
- Conversions, not just traffic: calls, WhatsApp messages, bookings and sales
- Branded searches, which tend to rise when people see your name in AI answers
- Referrals from AI assistants in your analytics, where they are identifiable
- Manual spot checks: ask the assistants your customers use the questions they would ask, and note whether and how you are mentioned
Finally, be cautious with anyone selling AI search shortcuts. Common examples:
- Special AI files or markup promised to "guarantee" AI citations; Google says these are not needed for its AI features
- Bulk AI articles published with no editing or expertise
- Paid link schemes or fake reviews, which can harm your visibility and reputation
- Blocking all AI crawlers by default without considering whether you want to appear in AI search results

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate strategy for AI Overviews?
Not according to Google. Its documentation says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews and AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. Strong SEO fundamentals, helpful content and accurate business information are the strategy.
Should I block AI crawlers from my website?
It depends on your goals. Blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot or using Google-Extended limits how your content is used for model training, while search-related crawlers such as Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot affect whether you appear in search answers. Most businesses that want customers to find them should keep search crawlers allowed.
Is traditional SEO dead because of AI search?
No. AI search features still rely on crawling, indexing and trust signals, which are what traditional SEO builds. What has shifted is emphasis: clear answers, real expertise, strong local and brand signals, and measuring conversions rather than raw traffic alone.
